The Prayer Shawl Ministry began in 2007 with a few women members knitting and crocheting once a week at the church.  The purpose of the shawls is to knit God’s love, care and warmth into each shawl for those who are in need of them.  They are presented at church service to people who are hurting in one way or another, to new members, or at baptisms.  They are also extended beyond the church to non-members to those who are in need of them.  The shawls are blessed by our pastor.  The card given to each shawl recipient contains a poem “A Touch of Tranquility” and also a prayer of comfort.

The Prayer Shawl Ministry is a project of the United Methodist Women of Epworth United Methodist Church.

A Touch of Tranquility

Busy hands are at work,

They will knit and crochet,

Making lovely

Prayer shawls

To be given away.

To hold you together,

When life falls apert,

from our loving hands

Straight to your heart.

Love and compassion

Go into each one,

A touch of tranquility,

And the shawl is done.

To each and every stitch,

There’s warmth

and a prayer,

A reminder to you

That God’s always there.

May God’s grace be upon this shawl…

Warming, comforting,

Enfolding, and embracing.

May this mantle be a safe haven…

A sacred place of security and well being…

Sustaining and embracing in good times as well as difficult ones.

May the one who receives this shawl

Be cradled in hope, kept in joy, graced with peace, and wrapped in love.

Blessed be!
